A value added activity is defined as being an activity (operation or service) for which customers are prepared to accept the costs (examples: welding, folding, milling). On the other hand, a non-value added activity is, from the point of view of the customer, unnecessary and even pointless (examples: waiting periods, delays, transportation).

By minimizing your non-value adding activities, you can maximize value adding activities, thereby increasing your productivity.
